Dominica November 2005
A week-long trip to the mountainous Carribean island of Dominica
(pronounced "Dom-in-EEK-a"). Primary rainforest covers over two thirds
of the island, making it arguably the most untouched island in the
Caribbean. This is not your typical tourist's Caribbean. The best beach
is accesible only by rappeling down the side of a cliff, and the loudest
nightlife hotspot is 15 feet in the air, in a treehouse surrounded by
the cacophony of jungle sounds.

We spend the night at the Anchorage Hotel and Dive Center. It's the one place we don't like - it feels like a big, impersonal hotel. Even if I was a hard-core diver, I wouldn't want to stay here. The room is stuffy and although there's an air conditioner, I open the patio door and windows anyhow, risking mosquitos. With such beautiful weather and in such a beautiful natural place, turning on the air conditioner just doesn't feel right.
